Appeal to identify witness after two grenade-type devices found

Friday, June 28, 2024

We’re continuing to investigate the incident where two grenade-type devices were found in Fulwood and are asking for your help to identify a potential witness.

We would like to speak to the man in the CCTV footage in connection with our investigation. We want to make it clear that he is being treated solely as a witness, is not in any trouble with us, and we do not believe he had any involvement in the incident at this time.

If you weren’t already aware, our officers were called to a property in Watling Street Road at around 12:25pm on Tuesday 18th June to a report that the devices had been found close to an address. The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team were called, a cordon was established, and a number of properties were evacuated.

A successful controlled explosion of one of the devices was carried out by the EOD at the scene, with the other device removed to a second location with a further controlled explosion taking place there.

One of the items was found to be a viable explosive device, the other was not a viable explosive device.

Our dedicated inquiry team continue to investigate the incident, and are asking you, the public, to check any dashcam, CCTV and mobile phone footage to see if they captured anything in the conservation area around Watling Street Road between midnight and 12:30am on Tuesday, 18th June.

They are now also asking you to look at the below still, and to contact us if you recognise the witness in it. We know that this isn’t of the highest quality, but we are hoping that someone may be able to recognise the person in it.

You may continue to see an increased police presence in the area as our officers carry out their enquiries. If you have any concerns, or any information, please don’t hesitate to approach us.

We believe this was an isolated incident and at this stage we do not believe it is linked to any other investigations, nor do we believe there is any further risk to the general public.

We want to reiterate that the man in the below image is being treated as a witness, and we do not believe he has any involvement in the incident, however, it is really important that we speak to him.

If you saw anything unusual or have information that could assist our investigation, please call 101 quoting log 0556 of 18th June 2024.
