Blackpool volunteer wins Special Constable of the Year award

Tuesday, December 6, 2022

A Special Constable, based in Blackpool, has been awarded the Special Constable of the Year award at a ceremony at Lancashire Constabulary’s Headquarters.

Special Constables are volunteer police officers who come from all walks of life, bringing a vast range of skills and experience. They are a vital and valued part of the Constabulary, with the same uniform and powers of arrest as police officers.

David Shackleton is one of the youngest people ever to join the Specials in Lancashire. Shortly after joining, it was evident that David was passionate about policing. He has been a great asset to Blackpool, coaching and mentoring new recruits, which led to him becoming a tutor.

He has provided much needed support, policing Blackpool’s hectic night-time economy, and has volunteered on several busy Saturday nights. He has also supported most major events at Blackpool and on the Fylde coast, such as many Illuminations switch-ons and the International Firework Displays.

David has been described by his colleagues as a “supportive all-rounder” who will turn his hand to anything, and his contribution is recognised and appreciated by peers, his staff and wider colleagues.

Chief Superintendent Karen Edwards, Divisional Commander for West Division, said: “I am extremely proud of all our Specials who go beyond the call of duty to keep our communities safe.

“Over the last 12 months, our 134 Specials across Lancashire have dedicated 43,000 hours of their time to helping catch criminals and policing our streets – an incredible achievement.

“I would like to say a huge congratulations to David who is a very worthy winner of Special Constable of the Year. He has consistently dedicated a high number of volunteering hours since joining in 2019, all whilst studying for his degree. I am proud to have him in my division.”

David’s exemplary service has been rewarded with a successful PC recruitment offer from Lancashire. He will begin training in January 2023.
