Dangerous driver convicted after high-speed pursuit

Tuesday, May 9, 2023

You will have heard of the ‘Fatal Five’ offences which are far more likely to be the cause of fatal collisions.

Speed is one of those and we want to show you an example of how dangerous – and in this case expensive – driving too fast can be.

Officers from the Rural Task Force, based in Waterfoot, requested a Toyota Auris to stop in Whitworth in the early hours of September 3 last year.

The Auris sped off and reached speeds of 80mph in a 30mph zone, overtaking other vehicles.

When the driver attempted to negotiate a corner at speed, he lost control of the car and it collided with the wall of a children’s nursery on Market Street, causing a great deal of damage.

Zain Anwar, 18, who had been behind the wheel, fled the scene but was traced with the help of CCTV footage.

Anwar, of Birkdale Road, Rochdale, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving.

At Burnley Crown Court, he was banned from driving for 18 months and will have to pass an extended driving test. Anwar was given a six-month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months.
