Personal Eligibility

Is there a minimum age limit for the role of PCSO?

Yes. You must be 18 years old to apply for the role of a PCSO. There is no upper age limit for applying to the police service.

I am not a British Citizen. Can I still apply to join Lancashire Constabulary as a PCSO?

Yes. If you are a Foreign National or Commonwealth Citizen you must have leave to enter or remain in the UK for an indefinite period. Most EC/EEA nationals have the right to reside in the UK and so will not need to demonstrate this. You must also have been resident in the UK for the last three years.

I have an un-discharged County Court Judgment; am I eligible to apply to be a PCSO?

No. PCSOs have access to sensitive information so all applicants will have their financial status checked. Applicants to the police service should normally be free from un-discharged debt or liability and able to manage existing loans. The emphasis is on the sensible management of debt.

I have a motoring offence(s). Can I still apply to become a PCSO?

Lancashire Constabulary will need to assess the motoring offences. However, if you have more than three separate endorsable traffic convictions (including fixed penalties) within the last five years prior to the application date you may not be eligible to join Lancashire Constabulary as a PCSO.

 

I have a criminal record. Can I still apply to become a PCSO?

Eligibility will depend on the nature and circumstances of the offence. It is not possible to set out a full list of convictions that will preclude a person from becoming a PCSO. There may also be circumstances where an individual whose suspected involvement in crime, or criminal associations make an offer of employment inappropriate.

 

Health and Appearance

I have a medical condition; does this prevent me from joining?

It will depend upon the nature of the medical condition. We require all applicants to pass our medical assessment to ensure you meet the BMI and health standards required. You will also be required to provide a urine sample whilst at your appointment, which will be tested for any illegal substances.

I have tattoos – will this stop me becoming a PCSO?

Not necessarily. If you have tattoos you will need to declare these on your application form. We will ask you to email us two photos of each tattoo to show us the location and nature of it/them. We will then assess the tattoo(s) against our standards.

Can I become a PCSO if I wear glasses or contact lenses?

Yes.

If I have a disability can I apply to become a PCSO?

Lancashire Constabulary welcomes applications from people with disabilities as defined by the Equality Act 2010 i.e. a person is disabled under this Act if they have a physical or mental impairment which has substantial and long-term (over 12 months) adverse effect on their ability to carry out normal day to day tasks. If you consider yourself to have a disability, please inform us of the type of reasonable adjustments you might need to assist you in participating in the recruitment and selection process. Lancashire Constabulary will try to make reasonable adjustments required where practicable.

I have epilepsy. Can I still apply?

You can still apply to become a PCSO. We will look at each case on its merits and take guidance from our Occupational Health Support Unit.

I have diabetes. Can I still apply?

You can still apply to become a PCSO We will look at each case on its merits and take guidance from our Occupational Health Support Unit.

I have dyslexia. Can I still apply?

You can still apply to become a PCSO. Should you require reasonable adjustments i.e. extra time at the assessment centre, you must submit a psychologist’s report which was undertaken when you were aged 16 or over. This must be submitted with your completed application form. Without this report reasonable adjustments will not be made.

Is there a height restriction for a PCSO?

No. There is no minimum or maximum height restriction.

 

Applying to become a PCSO

How many PCSOs do you currently have?

We currently have a total of 330 full-time and part-time PCSOs in the organisation.

Can I submit a paper application?

We no longer accept paper applications. All submissions need to be made through our application portal.

I have an ongoing PCSO application with another force can I still apply?

No. You must not have an ongoing application with another Police Force or, had an application to Lancashire Constabulary or any other Police Force rejected within the last six months.

Can I apply for this whilst in the application process for a PC role at Lancashire Police?

Yes, you can apply while being in the application process for another role.

I have an ongoing Special Constable application with yourselves or another force can I still apply?

Yes, you can be in two different processes at once, but please make us aware of this at the time of applying.

Do I need a Driving Licence to apply?

No.

I am a serving special constable. Can I transfer to become a PCSO?

No. You would have to go through the official recruitment process like all other applicants in order to qualify as a PCSO. If you have already sat and passed the NPIR tests, you will not need to attend the assessment centre.

If I am successful where will I be posted?

Successful applicants will be posted where there is an operational requirement. However, we will aim to do this based on where you live and as fairly as possible.

If I want to work part-time can I do a combination of both rota options?

No, you can only do one of the part-time rota options which you will need to choose prior to the start date.

I am wanting to do a part-time PCSO role, but I have already got a part-time job. Can I continue this?

You will be able to continue with your current part-time employment as long as you do not exceed working time regulations - a total of 48 hours per week. Any additional employment will be treated as secondary employment and will need to be authorised by the Professional Standards Department before we can issue an offer of employment.

I am going on holiday during the training period, will I be allowed to go?

No, you must be available to attend for the entire training period (though there is a week’s leave scheduled for part-time training). You will either need to re-consider your holiday plans should you reach the end stages or re-consider applying for the role at this time.

What is positive action and why do you use it?

Lancashire Constabulary uses positive action to actively support its aim to be a police force which is representative of the communities it serves. Support is actively given to people from communities which are identified as being under-represented in the workforce. Every applicant is still required to meet the required standards to progress through the recruitment process to ensure all applicants are treated equally and fairly.
