When you are stopped and searched the police are required to tell you certain information about the officer and the circumstances of the search.
The police officer should tell you their name, station, what they are looking for and why you have been stopped. They should also tell you the law under which they are stopping or searching you and will ask you to identify your ethnicity for their records. When conducting a stop and search a police officer does not need to be in uniform, unless they are conducting the stop and search under Section 44 of the Terrorism Act 2000.
If they are not in uniform, they must show you their warrant card.
You do not have to give the officer your name and address, but it is helpful for the police if you do so and for you if you wish to complain. Officers will also give you a form explaining why you were stopped or searched.
When conducting a stop and search, the police can ask you to remove your coat, jacket and gloves while in a public place. The police can also ask you to remove other clothing and anything you are wearing for religious reasons, such as a veil or turban, although they must take you out of public view when asking this. If the police ask you to remove more than your coat, jacket and gloves, they must also be the same gender as you.
